One important thing to consider when voting on these positions is that the person who is elected not only has to perform their role, but also has a part in shaping the team by working with the other board members. You should therefore consider both the assets and personal qualities of the candidates.
Commodore: The commodore should be an upperclassman, and have been on the board previously. A good commodore will be devoted to the team, a good leader, very organized, and is usually both a social and sailing member. Being the commodore is a large time commitment that requires regular work.
Team Captain: The captain should be an upperclassman who is an experienced sailor. It is necessary that they have experience with MCSA regattas. A good team captain will balance the regatta teams between freshman and those with more experience by considering things such as participation, ability, and attendance. The captain needs to be extremely organized because this position requires a substantial time commitment during the regatta seasons.
Vice-Commodore: The vice-commodore should have a place to host parties. They should be creative with social ideas and decorations. It requires a large time commitment for regattas and a couple large parties per semester, but the workload is irregular since they don’t have many responsibilities outside of social events and fundraising.
Treasurer: The treasurer must be organized and skilled at managing money. They need to have the time to attend meetings with the Office of Club Sports, fill out paperwork, and work with the Captain and Equipment Manager to budget money. An Accountancy major would make an excellent treasurer.
Team Sailing Instructor: The team instructor should be a skilled sailor who will take the time to give chalk talks and lead practices. This is a good board position for an underclassman since it mostly requires sailing experience, but they should have a car to transport people to the lake.
Secretary: This is also a good board position for an underclassman. The primary responsibilities are publishing the meeting minutes and maintaining our internet groups, so good attendance is mandatory.
Equipment Manager: This position requires mostly technical abilities. A good equipment manager knows how to rig and repair boats, as well as how to treat and keep track of equipment. The equipment manager must be very organized, and transportation to the lake is key.
